Children grow best in the context of positive and healthy relationships within the family. Each family undergoes a cycle of its on with developmental tasks organized around the needs of the children. The nuclear family begins with a formal and informal commitment of the partners to each other and to joining of the families, which requires a re-alignment of relationships and loyalties.

Parents of young children must adjust their routine, relationships, and priorities to accommodate and make space for them and to bond with the new grandparents. Families with adolescents must increase their flexibility to permit and support adolescent desires for gradual independence. The parents at this stage are often faced with midlife frustrations as they grapple with changing roles and the demands of caring for the older generation while attending to their children.

Often, the most difficult is the next transition where they must accept multiple exits from the family system. Adult children leave, new children are born, there is a re-focus back towards the life of the couple.
